Dark-eyed Junco

Scientific name: Junco hyemalis

With an extremely broad distribution across North America and an abundant population, the Dark-eyed Junco is widely recognized at least by sight if not by name by many people who have bird feeders in their yards. Multiple subspecies of Dark-eyed Juncos provide some plumage variation, though all are recognizable as juncos.

Many populations of juncos are migratory, but those that are not generally start breeding earlier in the season than those that make a return journey to breeding grounds. The oldest known junco reached at least 11 years of age in the wild.
