Barred Owl

Scientific name: Strix varia

Similar in appearance to the Spotted Owl of the western U.S., the Barred Owl is widespread and expanding, bringing it into contact with Spotted Owl populations in some areas. Its aggressive nature has led to declines of Spotted Owls in some areas. While a generalist in terms of food habits, the Barred Owl needs relatively large trees for nesting.

Raccoons are predators of Barred Owl eggs and young, and collisions with vehicles claim some adult Barred Owls each year. Despite these factors, Barred Owls have been increasing in North America in recent years. Individuals up to 18 years of age have been noted in the wild.
