South Africa
My friend Bob Lanier teaches at Jesuit High School in Dallas. He has inspired several of his students to pursue a career related to birds. One of his students spent two years in South Africa studying the Bald Ibis. Bob and I had the opportunity to visit with his student for two weeks. We had a great time visiting Kruger National Park as well as the Mkuze Game Reserve, Mtunzini and several private ranches. Here are just a few photos from our trip.
Peru
Bob also leads trips around the world for science teachers. I managed to tag along one of his two week trips to Peru and the Amazon River.
New Zealand
Hiking the Milford Trek was a great experince but there was little birding along the way. We did see numerous species in other parts of new Zealand including the Yellow-eyed Penguin and the pesky Kea.
The Lower Canyons
One of my all-time favorite trips was a one-week canoe trip on the Rio Grande River just below Big Bend National Park. We encountered Class 4 and Class 5 rapids along the way and warmed our aching arms and backs in hot springs on the Mexican side of the river. Well-known Texas Valley birder Jane Kittleman helped put the trip together. There were 5 canoes in the group, all from the Dallas Siera Club.
