Brown-headed NuthatchScientific name: Sitta pusilla A sedentary species of southeastern pine forests, the Brown-headed Nuthatch is known to use tools, typically a flake of bark that is used to remove additional flakes of bark in an effort to find insects or insect larvae. Brown-headed Nuthatches also eat many pine seeds. Brown-headed Nuthatches nest very low, particularly for a cavity nester. Well decayed trees that are easy to excavate a nest cavity in are used, which often means that the tree may fall by the following nesting season, so a new location may need to be found each year.
