Pelicans – Family Pelecanidae



The American White Pelican has a wingspan of 9 feet.
Unlike the Brown Pelican, the American White Pelican is found on inland lakes and waterways.

 

Egrets – Family Ardeidae

The Great Egret is the tallest of the all-white North American Egrets. Note the heavy yellow bill.

 

 

Snowy Egret

The Snowy Egret is found in both fresh and salt water.
Note the pointed black bill. The feet, not shown here, are yellow.

 

 



The Cattle Egret is often seen in fields looking for a meal. Often associated with cattle.
Note the yellow bill. Yellowish crest and chest feathers not present in winter.

The distinctive White Ibis has a long, drooping bill.

 

 

Terns – Family Laridae

The Caspian Tern is a large tern with orange to red bill. Compare with Royal Tern.

 

 

forester's tern

The Forster's Tern nests in the mid-west and into Canada. It has a black cap during the spring and summer. Common in winter along large parts of the Gulf and east coast, and California.
