Questions and Answers about Wild Birds

Question of the week:

How smart is a hummingbird?

A. Real smart, as it turns out.  Their hippocampus – the area of the brain responsible for learning and memory – is up to five times bigger than that in songbirds, seabirds and woodpeckers.

A hummingbird can remember where every flower is located in their territory and how long it takes to refill with nectar.  Not bad for a bird that has a pea-sized brain. So maybe size does not matter after all.
